The reason for choosing to search along the waterfront/dock area of Liverpool has been largely governed by this first stage of the project falling under the Independent Biennial umbrella. My exhibition venue is The Outhouse, which is in Woolton – hence mapping Woolton. The Biennial focus is in the city. To connect Woolton to the city centre via a route, I chose to travel south along the A562, and down to John Lennon Airport, knowing that the adjacent disused airport is a huge expanse of Brownfield and a site of (unofficial) scientific interest – a habitat of rare, ‘protected’, and ‘valued’ species.
The most obvious route from the disused airport to the city centre is then along the A561, which takes you directly to the City Centre and the Police Headquarters. But to take this route all the way into the City omits Liverpool’s most debated Brownfield site, a site that stirs the emotions of many a Liverpool citizen – everyone I have spoken to has something to say about this place – The Garden Festival Site…
To take in The Garden Festival Site, just before Sefton Park and Toxteth, I will take a right turn to journey along Riverside Drive (check out pages 122 – 123 of the Liverpool A-Z.) Carry along Riverside Drive and you end up at the Albert Dock.
